In the temple city of Kancheepuram devotees from different places throng in thousands every day at Sri Varadarajaswamy Temple to have Dharshan of Sri Varadarajaswamy and His Consort Sri Perundevi Thayar and invoke their Blessings and Grace. This temple is one amongst the ancient Temples and is valued as one of the important Sri Vaihanvite Divyadesams as sung in Praise by the Alwars and Achariars. The Eastern Gopuram, a towering nine storeyed structure of Sri Varadaraja temple is in a dilapidated condition and calls for extensive renovation and repairs.

Sri Azhagiya Manavala Jeeyar, the pontiff of Sri Azhagiya Manavala Jeeyar Math, coming in the lineage of "Koil Kalvijeeyar" has now undertaken the sacred renovation work of the ancient Eastern Gopuram. "Koil Kalvijeeyar" as per Temple Documents, is responsible for the structural works of the Temple. This mammoth Gopuram renovation work is possible only with the wholehearted support and liberal contribution by the Devotees and philanthropists. It is therefore appealed to all Devotees, philanthropists and general public to kindly contribute liberally and extend their esteemed helping hand for the completion of this sacred and memorable Divine cause.

About 75% of Kanchipuram's population is dependent on the Silk Saree industry, either directly or indirectly. Yet, the city does not manufacture Silk or any other raw material that goes into its silk sarees. The Silk industry is entirely made up of Handloom weavers and merchants. The Kanchipuram Silk Saree is hand-woven with dyed silk yarn with interleaved designs made with 'Jari' - a Silk thread twisted with a thin Silver wire and then gilded with pure Gold. Technically, the silk thread used for weaving Kanchipuram Sarees is made up of three single threads twisted together. Hence, the Kanchipuram Silk Saree is usually stronger (and more expensive) than its counterparts from Arni, Dharmavaram, etc. However, the designs on the Saree itself are what brings it the fame. Simply, the Kanchipuram Saree is a fine piece of art.

Although Kanchipuram Silk Sarees are available all over India and even in many parts of the world, there indeed are people who prefer to come to Kanchipuram to directly purchase Silk Sarees. Yet, there are many issues to be concerned about, when purchasing a Silk Saree in Kanchipuram. Here are a few:

In Kanchipuram, Silk Sarees are sold either through Co-operative societies or by private merchants. From the view point of the consumer, these two sources are almost the same, with a few small differences. As you might have learnt from the page on the Silk Industry, most of the large cooperative societies are government-run and hence have a very small profit margin. Also, the profits reach the weaver directly. Hence, cooperative societies are usually less expensive. Private merchants commonly have a larger profit margin. Private merchants also have other costs like advertising, middle agents, etc. Hence, expect their prices to be higher.

Almost all Silk Cooperative Society Showrooms and most Private Showrooms are located in and around the entire stretch of Gandhi Road (See Megamap). Many Private Showrooms are also located in Mettu Street. Rickshaw guys and tourist taxi operators usually get commissions from some of the merchants or societies if they bring in customers. Hence, you can't always expect them to give you a honest answer to "Which is a good place to buy Silk Sarees ? ". It is usually better to do your homework before coming to Kanchipuram.
